This book is not a recommendation if you have taste for reading for this does insufficient to quench your thirst but really a very well option if you want to leave no topic without studying. Grover will give you every small detail in Modern India and more than a book it is somewhat NOTES compilation. So if left with short time, go for it. Moreover, it starts with the death of Aurangzeb and ends even after the post independence era. Even some important acts like RTI, RTE are also covered here.

India's Struggle for Independence
Author - Bipan Chandra
This book has been a favorite of Critiques. The argument is that book tends to be biased and too much defensive on the part of Indian National Congress, which I too feel is not entirely a lie. Still there is a lot which you can gain from this book. This entirely focuses on the national movement and the movements related to it. It covers at least two chapters on Indian National Congress. Besides being an important resource for UGC NET, this book is also recommended for IAS aspirants.
